What is this book?
The inside page we photographed is headed Numbers and has two grids, each with ten rows. The first grid is for the numbers 1 to 10, the second is for 11 to 20. In each row the number is written in boxes, one digit per box, with the last row for 10 and 20 showing the two digits "1 0" and "2 0". A child can trace or copy the numbers, so the page gives a feel for how a two-digit number is built of two digits.
A little train with a boy driver on the cover sets the theme: numbers are carriages that follow each other in order.
What the grid teaches
- Order: the numbers are in rows, so the child sees that each number comes after the one above.
- Two-digit numbers: from 11 onwards a number has two digits in two boxes, and the child sees that 12 is a 1 and a 2 side by side.
- Writing: the boxes keep the numbers a similar size, which helps hand control.
- Tens and ones: 10 and 20 appear as a 1 or 2 with a 0, the first sign of the idea of tens.
Counting comes before writing
Always count real things before writing the number. Ask your child to count ten spoons, then to write 10. Let them put one spoon on each row of the grid. When the number means something, it is much easier to remember. Count up the stairs, count steps to the gate, count fruit in a bowl.
Common mistakes at this age
Four-year-olds often write 12 as 21, or skip a number when counting past 13. Say the number names slowly and clap each one. Number teens (13 to 19) are hard because the name says the ones before the tens: "fourteen" is four and ten. A number line or a counting rope with beads can help.
A weekly routine
- Count aloud to 10 every day, then to 20.
- Write two or three numbers a session.
- Play "what comes next?" with the numbers: 7, 8, ...?
- Play "what comes before?": ..., 15?
- Finish with a counting song.
Term 1 and Term 2
The Number Workbook Term 2 for Nursery is also on this site and carries the numbers on from 21 to 50.
