Smart Number Workbook Term 2 is the second-term maths workbook on The Smart School Nursery list on this site. What is this book?

The inside page we photographed is again headed Numbers, but this time it has three grids side by side, for 21 to 30, 31 to 40 and 41 to 50. Each has ten rows with two boxes per number, and the page ends with 30, 40 and 50. The first term reached 20; this term carries counting on to 50.

What changes from Term 1 to Term 2

In Term 1 a Nursery child learns the numbers up to 20. In Term 2 the same child learns that numbers follow a pattern: 21, 22, 23 ... 29, then 30. The tens digit stays the same for ten numbers and then moves up one. Once a child sees this pattern, counting to 50 stops being a list of new names and becomes a rule.

Counting in tens

Use bundles of ten sticks or ten beads on a string. Put three bundles on the table and say "thirty". Add one stick and say "thirty-one". Let your child add sticks one at a time up to 40. A number line from 0 to 50 on the wall, with the tens in a different colour, gives a quick visual guide.

Writing two-digit numbers

Check that your child writes the tens digit first, on the left. Many young children write 31 as 13 because they follow the sound of the word. Say the number slowly ("thirty-one"), write the 3 first, then the 1. Use the grid columns: the left box is for tens and the right box is for ones.

A short plan for the term

1. Weeks 1 and 2: revise 1 to 20 on a number line, then start 21 to 30.
2. Weeks 3 and 4: 31 to 40, with a daily "what comes next?" game.
3. Weeks 5 and 6: 41 to 50, with bundles of ten.
4. Last week: count to 50 forwards, then try a few numbers backwards from 20.

This plan is a suggestion; follow your child's teacher first.
