Smart Urdu Qaida, Ibtidai Hissa Awwal (سمارٹ اردو قاعدہ، ابتدائی حصہ اول) is the first Urdu primer on The Smart School Play Group list on this site. The cover is a bright grid of picture tiles: the Pakistani flag, a goldfish, the sun, a spinning top, an orange, a rabbit, a butterfly, a slingshot, a pomegranate, a pear, grains, a mango, a necklace, a coconut, a sofa and a train. This page is written for the 2027-28 session, with guidance in English so that every parent can help. We have the cover and one inside page of this book, so this page describes only what those photographs show and the way the book is used; it does not list lessons that we have not seen.

What is this book?
Each picture on the cover is the first thing a child sees for a letter. In an Urdu qaida, each letter is shown with a familiar word: Alif for انار (pomegranate), Bay for بطخ (duck), Pay for پنکھا (fan) and so on. The cover uses fruits, animals, objects and symbols from daily life, so the letters are connected to things a three-year-old knows: a flag for the homeland, a goldfish for a pet, a sofa for the home, a train for a trip.
The inside page we photographed is headed حروفِ تہجی (Huroof-e-Tahajji), a clear display of the whole alphabet on a soft pink page with a decorative border and flower-like corners. The Smart School's early-years Urdu series has three parts: Play Group (Hissa Awwal, this book), Nursery (Hissa Dom) and Prep (Hissa Soom).
Why picture tiles?
A three-year-old learns a letter faster when it is tied to an image. A flag, a fish or a train gives the letter a face. Use the cover as a game: point to a tile and say its name; then ask what sound the name starts with. Over time the sounds and letters link in the child's mind.
The alphabet page
The whole alphabet is on one page, in order from Alif to Yay. You do not need to teach all 38 letters in one go. Choose two or three letters a week and use the page as a map: "This week we are visiting Alif, Bay and Pay."
Using the qaida with an activity book
A qaida is for looking, reading aloud and listening. An amli kitab (activity book) is for tracing and doing. The Play Group Urdu ki Amli Kitab for Term 1 and Term 2 are on this site, and they are meant to be used together with this primer.
Reading aloud with a three-year-old
Sit beside your child and let them see your finger under each letter, moving from right to left. Say the letter, then the word, then ask your child to say it back. Do not correct pronunciation harshly. Repeat the correct sound gently and move on.
Games for the home
- I spy with tiles: "I spy something that starts with the sound of the fish."
- Tile memory: cover a tile and ask what was there.
- Draw the tile: let your child draw their favourite one.
- Song time: sing an Urdu alphabet song while pointing at the page.
Why this book?
- The whole Urdu alphabet on one clear page, with picture-word tiles on the cover.
- Guidance in English for parents who do not read Urdu fluently.
- Fits a three-part early-years series.
Who is it for, and when is it used?
It is for Play Group children at The Smart School, about three years old, as the first Urdu reading primer for the session. A parent or a teacher reads along with the child.
How to help at home
- Use the cover tiles as a word game.
- Say each letter with its picture word.
