What is this book?

The inside page we photographed is the title page, not a lesson page. It repeats the name "Smart Number Workbook", the level "Beginners Step 1" and "Term 1", with two cheerful bees and a hexagon with lines for Name, Class, Section and Campus. For a three-year-old, filling in the name is itself the first lesson: it is a chance for an adult to write the child's name and let the child see the letters.

What numbers mean to a three-year-old

At three, a child may recite "one, two, three" without knowing what the words stand for. The first goal is to link the word to a quantity: one apple, two shoes, three spoons. Touch each object as you count, and say the last number loudly: "three spoons". This one-to-one counting is the base of all later maths.

Early number ideas to play with

• Matching: put one spoon beside each plate.
• More and less: which plate has more grapes?
• Sorting: group toys by colour or size.
• Patterns: red, blue, red, blue with blocks.
• Big and small, long and short: compare two real objects.

A Play Group number workbook usually builds on ideas like these, so play them at home.

Using the title page

Write your child's name in clear letters in the Name line. Fill in the class (Play Group), the section and the campus yourself. Show your child where their name is and trace it with a finger. A child who sees their name in print feels that the workbook belongs to them.

A calm routine

1. Count real things for two minutes before opening the book.
2. Do one short activity a session.
3. Talk about what you did: "We counted three spoons!"
4. Stop at the first sign of tiredness.

A three-year-old's attention is about five to ten minutes. Keep it short and positive.
