Smart English Language Workbook Term 1 is the first-term English workbook on The Smart School Nursery list on this site. The cover says "Beginners – Step 2" and SRM (Supplementary Reading Material), and shows four children with books at a wooden sign with the letters Aa Bb Cc. This page is written for the 2027-28 session. We have the cover and one inside page of this book, so this page describes only what those photographs show and the way the book is used; it does not list lessons that we have not seen.

Exams Book House, Shop Number 4, Al Fazal Market, Urdu Bazar, Lahore, supplies it with cash on delivery across Pakistan and delivery to the Gulf countries.

Quick facts

What is this book?

In Nursery a four-year-old moves from recognising letters in picture books to forming them on a line. This workbook is the tool for that move. The inside page we photographed is headed Alphabet, and it shows the lowercase letters a to z in rows on writing lines: a to f, g to l, m to r, s to x, and y and z on the last row. The printed letters are the model; a child writes beside or under them.

"Beginners – Step 2" is the level printed on the cover. The Play Group workbooks of the same series say Step 1, and the Prep workbooks say Step 3, so Nursery is the middle step of a three-step path.

What the Alphabet page teaches

The writing lines on the page do three jobs. They show size: tall letters such as b, d, h, k and l reach the top line, and small letters such as a, c and e stay between the lines. They show position: letters such as g, j, p, q and y have tails that go below the line. And they build order: the letters are in alphabetical order, in rows of six, so a child can say the alphabet while pointing.

How to use a letters workbook in Nursery

  1. Say the letter's sound, not only its name: a as in apple, b as in ball.
  2. Trace the printed letter with a finger first, then with a pencil.
  3. Write the letter three times and stop. Quality matters more than quantity at four years old.
  4. Name one object that starts with the letter.
  5. Praise the effort and the shape, not speed.

Two or three letters a session is plenty. A pencil with a thick, triangular grip is easier for small hands.

Pencil grip and posture

Handwriting starts with the body. Check that your child sits with both feet on the floor, the page tilted slightly, and the pencil held between the thumb and first two fingers, not in a fist. If the grip looks tense, play with playdough, tweezers or threading beads for a few days before writing: these build the small muscles that writing needs.

What to expect in Term 1

In the first term most Nursery children will still be making some letters backwards or too big. That is normal. Look for progress over weeks, not days. If a letter such as b or d keeps being confused, make it with playdough, trace it in sand, and say its sound while writing it.

Term 1 and Term 2

The Term 2 English workbook for Nursery is also on this site. It carries the same Step 2 level on to the next stage of the year, so keep Term 1 for the first half of the session and Term 2 for the second half.

Why this book?

Who is it for, and when is it used?
