Smart Urdu Qaida, Ibtidai Hissa Dom (سمارٹ اردو قاعدہ، ابتدائی حصہ دوم) is the Urdu primer on The Smart School Nursery list on this site. The cover shows the Urdu letters Jeem, Bay and Alif in coloured boxes, a cat floating under a parachute, three happy children and an owl in headphones. The cover tag says "ابتدائی (حصہ دوم)", which means the second part of the early-years series. This page is written for the 2027-28 session, with guidance in English so that every parent can help. We have the cover and one inside page of this book, so this page describes only what those photographs show and the way the book is used; it does not list lessons that we have not seen.

Exams Book House, Shop Number 4, Al Fazal Market, Urdu Bazar, Lahore, supplies it with cash on delivery across Pakistan and delivery to the Gulf countries.

Quick facts

What is this book?

A qaida is the first Urdu reading book: it teaches the letters, how they look and sound, and then how to join them. The inside page we photographed is headed حروفِ تہجی (Huroof-e-Tahajji, the letters of the alphabet) and shows the whole Urdu alphabet in neat rows, from Alif to Yay, in a large clear font on a plain page.

The Smart School's early-years Urdu series is in three parts: Ibtidai Hissa Awwal for Play Group, Hissa Dom (this book) for Nursery, and Hissa Soom for Prep. Each part moves the child further along the path from letters to words.

What the alphabet page offers

The page lays out every letter once, in the traditional order: Alif, Alif-Madda, Bay, Pay, Tay, Ttay, Say, Jeem, Chay, Hay, Khay, Daal, Ddaal, Zaal, Raay, Rray, Zay, Zhay, Seen, Sheen, Suad, Zuad, Toay, Zoay, Ain, Ghain, Fay, Qaaf, Kaaf, Gaaf, Laam, Meem, Noon, Waaw, Hay, Hamza and Yay. A child can point at each letter while an adult says its name.

Letters before words

A Nursery child is not expected to read Urdu words fluently yet. The goal at this stage is to know the shape and name of each letter, to hear its sound at the start of a word, and to begin to copy the letter. Urdu is written from right to left, so show your child to start on the right and move left, and to keep the finger under the letter being read.

How to practise at home

  1. Say the letter, its sound and a word that starts with it (Alif – انار, Bay – بطخ).
  2. Trace the letter with a finger on a tray of sand or flour.
  3. Draw the letter large in the air, then on paper with a crayon.
  4. Use flash cards: a letter on one side, a picture on the other.
  5. Sing an Urdu alphabet song once a day.

Two or three letters a day, with revision of yesterday's letters, is a good pace.

Shapes that look alike

Many Urdu letters differ only by dots: Bay, Pay, Tay and Say; or Jeem, Chay, Hay and Khay. Teach them in families and count the dots aloud: one dot below for Bay, two dots above for Tay, three dots above for Say. This family method cuts the number of new shapes a child must learn.
