Smart Urdu ki Amli Kitab, Miyaad Awwal (سمارٹ اردو کی عملی کتاب، میعاد اول) is the first-term Urdu activity book on The Smart School Play Group list on this site. Amli kitab means "practical book": a book to do things in. The cover shows a ginger cat sitting on the Urdu letter Bay, with Alif, Pay and a pomegranate, and carries the tag "ابتدائی (حصہ اول)" and the mark SRM. This page is written for the 2027-28 session, with guidance in English so that every parent can help. We have the cover and one inside page of this book, so this page describes only what those photographs show and the way the book is used; it does not list lessons that we have not seen.

What is this book?
The inside page we photographed is headed حروفِ تہجی (Huroof-e-Tahajji, the letters of the alphabet). It shows the first letters of the Urdu alphabet in a clear, large black font: Alif and Alif-Madda at the top, then Bay, Pay, Tay, Ttay and Say, and then Jeem, Chay, Hay and Khay. Behind the letters there is a very faint outline of a picture for the child to colour. The letters are the model for tracing.
A Play Group child is not expected to read Urdu yet. The aim of the first term is to see the letters, to say their names and to start moving a crayon along their shape.
The first letters, in families
The page shows letters in groups that look alike. Alif is a simple straight line. Bay, Pay, Tay, Ttay and Say all share the same boat-shaped body and differ only in the dots (one below for Bay, three below for Pay, two above for Tay, a small ط above for Ttay, three above for Say). Jeem, Chay, Hay and Khay share the same hook shape and differ again in their dots. Learning them as families means fewer new shapes.
Urdu is written from right to left
Show your child that Urdu starts on the right and moves left, the opposite of English. Let them put a finger under the first letter on the right and move left. When tracing a letter, look at where the stroke starts: most start at the top right and end towards the left.
Tracing activities
- Trace the letter with a finger in the air, then on the page.
- Use a crayon, not a pencil, at three years old.
- Say the letter name three times.
- Say a word that starts with it: Alif – آم, Bay – بطخ, Pay – پنکھا.
- Colour the faint picture behind the letters.
One or two letters a day is plenty.
Making Urdu fun
Use playdough to roll letters, sand trays to trace them, and flash cards with a picture on the back. A cat on the cover is a good character: let your child make the cat say "Bay" or "Pay". Sing the Urdu alphabet song once a day.
