What is this book?

The Prep year is where a five-year-old moves from counting by heart to understanding numbers. This workbook begins with colours, shapes and patterns, which train the eye to notice and compare, then introduces zero, number and quantity, comparisons and number words, and builds up to numbers in figures from 1 to 50.

After that come the first operations (addition and subtraction), the idea of before, after and between, odd and even numbers, a number sequence, the clock at o'clock and the idea of a set. The contents page lists topics only; it does not print page numbers.

A workbook like this works best when a parent turns each topic into a two-minute game before the page is opened: count the steps on the way to school for the number topics, name the shapes on a signboard for the shape topics, and ask which of two cups holds more for the comparison topics. The page then feels like a record of something the child has already understood.

The term in four steps

1. Noticing (colours, shapes, patterns). Sorting and matching build the habit of looking closely.
2. Meaning of number (zero, number and quantity, comparisons, number in words). A numeral is linked to a real quantity.
3. The number line (number line, ordering, 1 to 50, counting backwards, missing numbers, before, after and between). Numbers get a place and an order.
4. First operations and ideas (odd and even, addition, number sequence, o'clock, subtraction, sets). The child begins to combine numbers and meets time and groups.

Why zero needs a topic of its own

Zero is a surprise for a five-year-old: it is a number that means "none". Use an empty plate or an empty cup to show that zero is the number of biscuits left when you have eaten all of them. Once that idea is clear, subtraction is far easier.
