What is this book?
The inside page we photographed is again headed حروفِ تہجی, and it shows more of the alphabet than the first-term book: Alif and Alif-Madda at the top, then Bay, Pay, Tay, Ttay and Say; then Jeem, Chay, Hay and Khay; then the single letters Daal, Ddaal and Zaal; then Raay, Rray, Zay and Zhay; and finally Seen, Sheen, Suad and Zuad. The letters are black on a pale background, with a faint tree-shaped outline behind for colouring. So the second term widens the set of letters a child traces.
A "Beginners Step 2" tag appears on the cover of this book. Please check it with the school when you order, because the other Play Group books of the series say Step 1.
From 11 letters to about 25
In Term 1 a child meets the first letters; in Term 2 the set grows to include letters that are not joined to the next letter (Daal, Ddaal, Zaal, Raay, Rray, Zay, Zhay) and the Seen family. These are simpler to write because they are single, small shapes, which makes this a good moment to build confidence.
Dots make the difference
Many letters differ only by dots. Zaal has one dot above Daal. Zay has one dot above Raay, and Zhay has three. Teach the pairs together: Daal – Zaal, Raay – Zay. Count the dots aloud and ask your child to put the right number of dots on a blank letter.
Daily practice
- Read the letters on the page with a finger from right to left.
- Choose two letters and trace them three times each.
- Say a word that begins with each.
- Colour the picture behind.
- Revise yesterday's letters for one minute.
Short and often beats long and rare.
Making the page a game
- Letter hunt: find Alif on a sign or a newspaper.
- Dot game: put pebbles on the dots of each letter.
- Echo reading: you read a letter, your child repeats it.
- Mystery letter: hide a letter card and give a clue: "It has two dots above."
