What is this book?
The Smart School's early-years Urdu primers come in three parts: Hissa Awwal for Play Group, Hissa Dom for Nursery and this Hissa Soom for Prep. A five-year-old in Prep has usually met the letters in the first two years, so the third primer is where the child is expected to move from single letters to joined letters and short words.
The cover design matches the Nursery primer (the same letters, cat and owl), in a purple colour for Prep, so that children see the series as one family.
From letters to words
Prep is the year in which a child starts to read Urdu words. The first step is to see how letters change shape when they join: Bay at the start, in the middle and at the end of a word. Show your child a simple word such as باب or بابا and point to each letter. Read the word slowly, then quickly.
A simple reading routine
- Say the letters of the word one by one, from right to left.
- Say the word.
- Say a sentence with the word.
- Write it with a finger on the table.
- Ask your child to find the word in a book or on a sign.
Ten minutes a day, five days a week, is more useful than an hour on Sunday.
Use with the Prep activity books
The Prep Smart Urdu ki Amli Kitab for Term 1 and Term 2 (Miyaad Awwal and Miyaad Doum) are on this site. They are practice books with writing and exercises, and they go with this primer.
What to do if reading is slow
Urdu reading takes time. If your child still confuses similar letters, go back to the letter families (Bay, Pay, Tay, Ttay, Say; Jeem, Chay, Hay, Khay) and count dots. Praise every correct word, even if the child needs help with the next one. A confident beginner becomes a fluent reader.

- Follows the Single National Curriculum 2020, as printed on the cover.
