What is this book?

The inside page we photographed is headed Numbers. A tall column of ten boxes shows the numbers 1 to 10 from top to bottom, with the boxes for 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 coloured orange (the numbers from six on are shaded to stand out from one to five). Beside the column are faint spirals and circles to trace, and in the corner two children ride a roller coaster shaped like a pencil.

The number track gives a three- or four-year-old a picture of the counting line, and the tracing shapes train the hand for writing the numbers later.

One to five, then six to ten

The change of colour from 5 to 6 is a clue to a very important idea: we have five fingers on one hand, so 1 to 5 fit on one hand and 6 to 10 need the other. Count on fingers, then say "one hand" for five and "two hands" for ten. This makes ten easy to understand as a whole.

Tracing before writing numbers

The spirals and circles beside the track are warm-up shapes. Writing the numbers 1 to 9 uses lines, curves and loops, so a child who can trace circles and spirals is already building the strokes for 0, 6, 8 and 9. Do the shapes first, then try a number.

Games with a number track

• Hop and count: draw the track on the floor with chalk and hop from 1 to 10.
• Roller coaster: use a toy car on the track and say the numbers as it passes.
• Colour the number: colour the box for the number you counted.
• Missing number: cover one box and ask which number is hiding.

A plan for the term

1. Week 1: count to 5 on the track, one hand.
2. Week 2: count to 10, two hands.
3. Week 3: trace the shapes and number 1, 2, 3.
4. Week 4: trace 4, 5, 6.
5. Week 5: trace 7, 8, 9, 10.

This plan is a suggestion; follow the teacher's pace.
