Smart English Language Workbook Term 2 is the second-term English workbook on The Smart School Play Group list on this site. Like the first-term book it says "Beginners – Step 1" and SRM on the cover, with giant letters a, b and c. This page is written for the 2027-28 session. What is this book?

The inside page we photographed is another Alphabet page: the lowercase letters a to z in light grey to trace, but this time with the faint outline of a tree behind them (the first-term page had a cat). The pictures change from book to book so that the same alphabet feels new, which is helpful for a child who has already traced it once.

By the second term a Play Group child has usually been at school for five or six months, so the same page can be traced with more confidence: a firmer line, fewer breaks and letters that stay closer to the grey guide.

Same alphabet, new picture

Repeating the alphabet is the heart of early learning. A new picture, here a tree, gives the repetition a fresh face. Use it to start a talk: What is on a tree? Which letter does tree start with? Which other things start with t? Let the child colour the tree while you say the letters.

What to look for in Term 2

Compare your child's tracing now with the Term 1 page. Look for three things: whether the pencil stays closer to the grey line, whether strokes are smoother, and whether the child can name more letters without help. Small gains matter. Show your child the difference between then and now: "Look how well you do it now!"

Letters in the child's name first

If your child still finds 26 letters too many, begin with the letters in their own name and in the names of family members. Children learn letters faster when the letters mean something to them. A name card on the fridge, written in lowercase with a capital at the start, is a good model.

Games that practise letters

• Letter hunt: find a letter on signs, packets and books.
• Magnet letters: match the letters on the fridge to the page.
• Sand tray: write a letter with a finger.
• Bath-time letters: foam letters on the tub wall.
• I spy: "I spy something that starts with t."
