Smart English Language Workbook Term 2 is the second-term English workbook on The Smart School Nursery list on this site. What is this book?

The inside page we photographed is again the Alphabet page, with the lowercase letters a to z in four rows of six and a last row with y and z, each on its own writing lines. Seeing the same page opening the second-term book tells us that the alphabet is revised at the start of Term 2, which is exactly what a four-year-old needs after the long break between terms.

In Term 2 the aim is to turn recognition into fluency: the child should write each letter with the right shape, on the line, with less help than in Term 1.

From shape to speed

In the second half of Nursery the focus shifts from "can you make this letter?" to "can you make it smoothly?". Ask your child to write a letter without looking at the model, then check against the page. If it matches, move on; if not, trace again. Short, repeated practice builds the muscle memory that makes writing easy later.

Joining sounds to letters

Keep sounds and letters together. Say the sound, write the letter, and then think of a word that starts with it: c – cat, d – dog. At home, collect small objects that start with a letter and put them in a box: a button for b, a cup for c. This makes the alphabet physical and fun.

A calm revision routine for the start of Term 2

1. Spend the first week looking at the alphabet page only: say the letters in order and point.
2. In week 2, write the letters in your child's name and the names of family members.
3. In week 3, trace the page again, with a different colour pencil.
4. In week 4, write the letters from memory on a whiteboard and compare with the page.

This four-week routine is a suggestion, not the school's plan: follow your teacher's pace first.

Signs of readiness for Prep

By the end of Nursery a child who can say all 26 letter sounds, write most letters on a line and recognise their own name in print is well prepared for Prep. If some letters are still hard, take extra time with those during the holidays.
