From letters to language

The book opens with a poem ("I am a good child") and "My introduction", so the child begins by reading and speaking about themselves. Lessons then teach the aspirated sounds, two letters that make one sound, in pairs: Bh and Ph, Th and Tth, Jh and Chh, Dh and Ddh, and Rh and Rrh.

Grammar in small steps

Singular and plural ("wahid, jama"), "this" and "that" ("yeh" and "woh"), "mera" and "meri", and masculine and feminine ("muzakkar, muannas") are all introduced with picture and fill-in-the-blank tasks. Counting in words is spread over several lessons, with exercises that ask the child to count pictures and write the number.

Manners and values

Two lessons teach staying away from strangers and the manners of conversation, and there is a lesson on "My beloved Pakistan". These help a five-year-old connect language with behaviour.

A home routine

Read the lesson aloud and ask your child to repeat.
Write the new word on a card and stick it on the wall.
Count objects in Urdu words: ek, do, teen.
Make a sentence from each new word.
Revise the previous term's letters once a week.
