Contents of Ready Steady Go Mathematics Pre-1 First Term

Each unit is listed with its topics and the page on which it starts.

How the term is built

• Recap (page 1) revises numbers, counting, adding and take away from Nursery.
• Units 1 to 3 cover counting 50 to 54, comparing numbers, zero, before, after and between, counting backwards, the number one and 2D shapes.
• Units 4 to 6 bring place value (tens and ones), patterns, numbers three to five, addition and counting to 69.
• Units 7 to 9 cover numbers six to ten, subtraction, counting to 74, day and night, time, the calendar and seasons.
• The final recap (page 87) revises 2D shapes, before, after and between, addition, subtraction and patterns.

Why place value matters in Pre 1

Tens and ones are the foundation of all later arithmetic. A child who understands that 53 means five tens and three ones will find Class 1 addition and subtraction much easier. Bundles of ten sticks make this concrete.

Time and the calendar

The last units introduce day and night, telling the time and the calendar and seasons. Use a wall calendar at home and let your child tick off the day each morning.

Why this book?

• A clear first-term plan from counting to place value, addition and subtraction.
• Shapes, patterns, time and calendar make maths part of daily life.
• Recaps at the start and the end help revision.

Who is it for, and when is it used?

It is for Pre 1 (Prep) children at Army Public Schools, about five years old, in the first term of the school year. Parents can help by counting real things, practising tens and ones and talking about the calendar.

How to help at home

• Bundle ten sticks with a rubber band and add single sticks to make numbers.
• Count backwards from 20 on the stairs.
• Hunt for 2D shapes around the house.
• Use a wall calendar to talk about days and seasons.
• Make addition and subtraction stories with toys.
