What is this book?
It is a first look at the world for a five-year-old. The book starts with the child, their family and their health, moves outward to their neighbourhood and their country, then goes on to plants and animals, the land, the environment, technology and the weather. This order, from "me" to "the wide world", is how young children naturally build up a picture of where they live. The chapters are short, from four to fourteen pages, so a topic fits into a week of class time.

The book in five parts
- Me and mine (chapters 1 to 4). Family, healthy habits, the people and places near us, and our homeland. Healthy Habits is the longest early chapter, with fourteen pages, because habits learned now stay for life.
- Needs and links (chapters 5 to 7). Food, water and shelter, then how people travel and how they talk to each other.
- Living things (chapters 8 to 10). Sorting living from non-living things is a first step in science. Plants follow, and animals get the most room, twelve pages, because children love them.
- The Earth around us (chapters 11 to 13). Landforms, natural resources and the environment, which gives a first sense of geography and of looking after the planet.
- Technology and weather (chapters 14 and 15). The machines children see every day, and the weather and seasons, which are easy to observe at home.
Who, when, where and why
- Who: Prep children at The Smart School, and the parents who help with homework.
- When: through the 2027-28 session, a chapter every week or so.
- Where: in class and at home, with a walk outside as the best companion.
- Why: to give a gentle first introduction to science and social studies, aligned with the Single National Curriculum 2020.
- How: talk first, look at the pictures, then do the activity.
How to help at home
- Take a short walk and name the plants, animals, vehicles and weather you see.
- Sort objects into "living" and "non-living" at home.
- Ask your child to tell you about their family in one sentence.
- Keep a weather chart on the fridge for a week.
Chapter by chapter: what to talk about
- Family and healthy habits: who lives in your home, and how do we keep clean, eat well and sleep early?
- People, places and homeland: who helps us in our neighbourhood, and what is special about Pakistan?
- Needs, transport and communication: what do all living things need, how do we travel, and how do we send a message?
- Living and non-living things, plants and animals: which things in the room are alive, and what do plants and animals need?
- Landforms, resources and environment: hills, rivers and plains; why we save water and keep the street clean.
- Technology and weather: which machines help us at home, and what is the weather like today?
A tip for parents: pick one chapter each week and finish it with one real-life task, such as watering a plant or drawing the weather. At this age, doing is how children learn.
