The pattern of the lessons

The book starts with a hamd (praise of Allah) and a naat (praise of the Prophet, peace be upon him), then the alphabet. After that, each letter has two parts: a reading lesson ("parhai") where the child learns the shape and sound, and a usage lesson ("istemaal") where the child makes words with it. Joining letters with Alif, Waaw, Yay and Bari Yay teaches how Urdu words are built. Revision ("aada") lessons and handwriting ("khush khati") pages come at regular points.

The first term covers Alif, Alif-Madda, Bay, Pay, Tay, Ttay, Say, Jeem, Chay, Hay, Khay, Daal, Ddaal, Zaal and Raay, with joining practice. The Second Term book (Mayaad Doum) then moves to aspirated letters, plurals, genders and counting in words.
