What is this book?
It is the student book for the fifth year of Cambridge Primary Science. Each unit has a clear set of lessons, plus the science strand, the enquiry skills (including "Models and representations") and a "Science in Context" idea. Class 5 expects children to plan investigations more independently, to use models and to explain results. The cover, with children wearing goggles and using a spoon, a beaker and a table of temperatures, reflects that practical side.

- Life cycles of flowering plants (page 2). Flowering and non-flowering plants, pollination, fruits and seeds, how seeds are spread and how a seed germinates.
- Sound (page 31). How sounds are made, and what volume and pitch mean and how to change them.
- States and properties of matter (page 56). Gases, the properties of water, evaporation and condensation, and solutions.
- The digestive system (page 88). The parts and functions of the system and what makes a balanced diet.
- Forces and magnetism (page 104). Gravity, normal and applied forces, friction, air and water resistance, upthrust, multiple forces, magnets and magnetic force. It is the longest unit.
- Seasons and adaptations (page 136). How the Earth's movement around the Sun creates seasons, and how plants and animals, including predators and prey, are adapted to their environments.
Who should buy this book?
- Parents of Class 5 children whose schools use Cambridge Primary Science and name Learner's Book 5.
- Teachers planning lessons by strand and enquiry skill.
- Tutors who coach children for school tests and want a clear structure.
Why this book?
Unit 5 is a particularly full introduction to forces, with lessons on upthrust, air and water resistance, satellites and multiple forces. The seasons unit connects science with geography, and the digestive system unit links to health and nutrition. The page numbers above make it easy to follow what the class is doing at any time.
When is it used?
Schools usually follow the units in order across the year, with plants and sound in the first part, matter and digestion in the middle, and forces and seasons later. Ask your school for the plan.
How to help your child with it
- Plant seeds and record how long they take to germinate.
- Make rubber-band and bottle instruments to explore pitch and volume.
- Heat water in a pan (with an adult) and talk about evaporation and condensation.
- Look at day length through the year, and talk about why it changes.
