What is this book?
It is the student book for the fifth year of Cambridge Primary Mathematics. It builds on Class 4 and pushes children to work with larger numbers, decimals, percentages, fractions and ideas of proportion. Page 8, "Thinking and Working Mathematically", introduces the problem-solving habits that the whole series is built around.
The units are grouped by strand (Number, Geometry and measure, and Statistics and probability), and the five projects (Decimal dice, Pattern prediction, Depicting data, Picture frames and Time for bed) tie several skills together in practical tasks.

What children practise, in plain words
Whole numbers and number patterns. The book opens with place value and the four operations on whole numbers, then looks at counting and sequences, square and triangular numbers and common factors and multiples. These units lay the foundations for algebra later.
Decimals, fractions and percentages. Unit 7 deals with decimal place value and rounding. Unit 9 adds, subtracts, multiplies and divides decimals, and even includes a lesson on distance. Unit 11 links percentages, fractions and decimals and teaches equivalence and comparison. Unit 13 is a long unit on fraction operations: adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing. Unit 15 introduces proportion with the unitary method.
Shape and measure. Pupils measure and draw angles, study triangles and quadrilaterals, learn about symmetry (including rotational symmetry), draw nets of cubes and 3-D shapes, and work on area and perimeter. Unit 14 is on time.
Data. Unit 4 covers averages (mode, median, mean and range) and unit 10 covers bar graphs. The project "Depicting data" lets pupils choose how to display their results.

Why this book?
It is the book that gets children ready for Class 6 maths. Its units on decimals, percentages and fraction operations are among the topics that many children find hard in later years, and the book teaches them slowly and in several steps. The five projects are a useful break, and the glossary on page 230 helps with vocabulary.
When is it used?
Schools usually follow the units in order across the year. The early units (whole numbers, angles, patterns, averages and factors) come first, then shape and decimals, then percentages, fraction operations and proportion near the end. Your school or tutor will tell you which units fall in which term.
How to help your child with it
- Use money and measuring jugs to practise decimals.
- Cut a pizza or a roti into equal parts to make fractions real.
- Read the percentage labels on shop discounts together.
- Ask your child to check an answer with a different method, as the book encourages.
