What is this book?
This is the student book for the fourth year of Cambridge Primary Science. It opens with a short section called "Working like a scientist", which explains how scientists observe, plan and test. Then the six units follow, each with a science strand, a Thinking and Working Scientifically strand (including "Models and representations" in this book) and a "Science in Context" idea.
Class 4 is a step up in depth. Units introduce topics such as energy transfers, particles, volcanoes and earthquakes, and electrical conductors, which prepare children for the more detailed science of Class 5 and 6.

What children learn, unit by unit
- Living things (page 2). Bones and skeletons, why we need them, how they help us move, different kinds of skeletons in animals, and medicines and infectious diseases.
- Energy (page 31). Where energy comes from and how it moves from one place to another and changes form. The unit links energy to living things.
- Materials (page 49). Substances and particles, the behaviour of solids and liquids, melting and solidifying, and chemical reactions.
- Earth and its habitats (page 70). The layers of the Earth, volcanoes, earthquakes and different habitats. The cover globe matches this unit.
- Light (page 96). How we see things, how light travels, reflection, light in the solar system, day and night, and an investigation of shadow lengths.
- Electricity (page 124). Conductors and insulators, whether water conducts electricity, electrical appliances, switches and changing the components of a circuit.
Who should buy this book?
- Parents of Class 4 children whose schools use Cambridge Primary Science and name Learner's Book 4.
- Teachers planning lessons by strand and enquiry skill.
- Tutors who want a clear unit-by-unit structure.
Why this book?
The topics link to the real world: skeletons and medicine, energy in daily life, volcanoes and earthquakes, and household electricity. The fair-testing investigations, such as the shadow-length enquiry in unit 5, give children hands-on practice, and the "New science skills" section on page 148 gathers the main methods in one place.
When is it used?
Schools usually teach the units in order. Life science and energy come first, then materials, Earth, light and electricity. Ask your school for the term plan.
How to help your child with it
- Look at animal skeletons in pictures and compare a bird, a fish and a cat.
- Test which household materials conduct electricity with a battery, a bulb and wires, with an adult's supervision.
- Measure the shadow of a stick at different times of the day.
- Ask "How do you know?" after each observation.
