Quick facts about this book

What is this book?

It is the student book for the third year of Cambridge Primary Science. Like the other books in the series, the contents page lists three layers beside each unit: the science strand (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, or Earth and Space), the Thinking and Working Scientifically skills, and the Science in Context idea, which links the lesson to real life. Class 3 is the year in which children begin to meet the Earth and Space strand, with a whole unit on the Earth and the Moon at the end of the book.

What children learn, unit by unit

  1. Plants are living things (page 2). The unit begins with a basic question, "alive or not alive?", then looks at plant parts, how plants use light, and what they need in terms of water and temperature. It is full of experiments such as growing plants in different conditions.
  2. Mixing materials (page 35). Solids, liquids and gases, then ways of separating mixtures, dissolving, filtering and separating materials from rocks.
  3. Light and shadows (page 64). How shadows form and change, and the difference between transparent and translucent materials.
  4. Staying alive (page 91). Human organs, groups of animals and their life cycles, food chains and fossils.
  5. Forces and magnets (page 125). Forces and forcemeters, gravity, friction, magnets and magnetic materials.
  6. The Earth and the Moon (page 154). The shapes of the Earth, Sun and Moon, the Moon itself and why it seems to change shape through the month.

Who should buy this book?

Why this book?

The experiments are simple and use everyday objects, so a child can repeat many of them at home. The book also makes children think like scientists, which is a major aim of the Cambridge course. The "New science skills" section on page 177 collects methods such as fair testing and recording in tables, which are useful for every subject.

When is it used?

Schools usually follow the units in order across the year. Unit 1 (plants) often starts the year, and unit 6 (Earth and Moon) finishes it. Check your school's plan.
