What is this book?
It is the student book for the second year of Cambridge Primary Science. Every unit is divided into short topics, and the contents page shows three extra layers for each unit: the science strand (such as Biology, Physics or Chemistry), the Thinking and Working Scientifically strand (planning an enquiry, carrying it out, and analysing and concluding) and a Science in Context idea that links the topic to real life. This is helpful for teachers, who can see exactly what skills each unit trains.
The "Science skills" section on page 170 gathers the practical skills that children use across the book, such as observing and recording, so it is worth reading together with your child at the start of the year.

What children learn, unit by unit
- Environments and habitats (page 2). Children look at where living things live, how plants and animals suit different places, what rocks are like, and how people can look after the environment. The "Science in Context" idea is to explain how we can use science to understand how we affect the world we live in.
- Forces and movement (page 36). Pushes and pulls are the start. Children see how a force can change the shape of an object, make it go faster or slower, or change its direction.
- Getting materials right (page 59). Natural and man-made materials, their properties, choosing the right material for a job, testing it fairly and how materials can change. This unit is full of simple experiments.
- Humans and animals grow (page 88). Comparing animals, growth, inherited features, keeping healthy and looking after teeth.
- Light (page 123). Sources of light, darkness, and why the Sun seems to move across the sky. The context idea looks at how people's understanding of science was different in the past.
- Electricity (page 146). Where we use electricity, how to stay safe with it and how to make a simple circuit.
Who should buy this book?
- Parents of Class 2 children whose schools use Cambridge Primary Science and name Learner's Book 2.
- Teachers who plan lessons around the strands and the "Thinking and Working Scientifically" skills.
- Tutors who want a clear, unit-by-unit guide for young learners.
Why this book?
It teaches science as something to do and not only to read. The three strands on the contents page show that every unit includes practical enquiry, and the real-life context ideas make topics such as electricity and habitats feel close to a child's life. The page numbers above make it easy to find any lesson.
When is it used?
The units are usually taught in order across the school year, from habitats (unit 1) to electricity (unit 6). Your school will tell you which units it covers in which term.
How to help your child with it
- Go for a short "habitat walk" in a garden or park and notice plants and animals.
- Test materials at home: which ones float, bend or stretch?
- Build a simple circuit together if your school allows it, and talk about safety rules for plugs and sockets.
- Ask your child "What do you think will happen?" before every experiment, then "What happened?" after.
