Quick facts about this book

What is this book?

It is the student coursebook for the second year of the Cambridge Primary Mathematics programme. Each unit is divided into short lessons, and the book keeps returning to the idea that maths is about thinking, not only about getting an answer. The page "Thinking and Working Mathematically" on page 8 introduces the habits the book wants children to build: asking questions, noticing patterns, explaining ideas and checking answers.

The units are arranged by the Cambridge "strands": Number, Geometry and measure, and Statistics and probability. Between groups of units there are projects, which are longer, practical tasks that bring several skills together, such as sorting, measuring and planning.

What children practise, in plain words

Number (units 1, 5, 6, 8 and 10). Children count and order numbers to 100, learn to read them in words, round them and regroup tens and ones. They add and subtract, then begin multiplication and division. Unit 10 links addition with subtraction so that children see them as opposites, and unit 8 introduces fractions of numbers, such as half of 20. Unit 6 looks at money, which makes the numbers real.

Geometry and measure (units 2, 3, 7, 11, 12, 13 and 15). Pupils name and sort 3D and 2D shapes, look at symmetry and fractions of shapes, measure length with rulers, draw lines, learn the calendar and then read clock times. Later units add angles and turns, circles, mass, temperature and capacity, and symmetry, position and movement.

Statistics and probability (units 4, 9 and 14). The book begins with Carroll diagrams and tally charts, then moves to Venn diagrams, lists, tables, pictograms and block graphs. Unit 14 mixes pattern with early ideas of probability.

Projects. The six projects (Possibly odd; Strange submarines; Borrowing pencils; Time a task; 100 square; Sorting orange juice) are good for homework and class displays, and they give children a reason to use what they have learned.

Who should buy this book?

Why this book?

The units are short, the pictures are friendly and the three strands keep each lesson focused. The projects add variety. Children get to see a topic from several angles, such as counting objects, writing numbers in words and comparing them, which supports real understanding. The page numbers above also help parents follow what the class is doing at any point of the year.

When is it used?

In a typical school year, schools work through the units in order, and many follow the sequence shown in the contents. The first half of the book (to unit 7) usually belongs to the first term or semester, and units 8 to 15 follow. Your school will tell you which units it covers by which month.
