What is this book?

It is a skills book. Each page has a task: colour the grapes, join the dots to make shapes, doodle a hot-air balloon, thumb-print animals, make an Eid card, weave a mat. A Prep child who only ever colours does not build the same hand skills as one who also cuts, folds, weaves and prints, and this book rotates through all of these.

What art practice does for a five-year-old

Art pages look like play, but they train the same small hand muscles that handwriting needs. Tracing lines, colouring inside shapes, pressing a print and tearing paper to paste all build grip strength and pencil control. Prep is also the year when children learn to follow a short instruction in order: first draw, then colour, then paste.
