What is this book?

It teaches reading through sound families. A child learns that "cat", "hat" and "mat" end the same way, and then meets the pairs of letters that make one sound (digraphs) and the letters that blend together (blends). The book takes small steps and revisits each family before moving on.

How the book is paced

1. Letters and vowels first (lessons 1 to 4). Capital and small letters, consonants and vowels.
2. Word families (lessons 5 to 18). The endings at, et, it, ot, ut, then an, en, in, un, then ap, ip, op, with a review after each group. A child learns that changing the first letter makes a new word.
3. Digraphs (lessons 19 to 33). Two letters, one sound: sh, ch, th, wh, then ai, ay, ee, ea, then oa, ie, ow, ew. There are reviews after each small set.
4. Blends (lessons 34 to 39). br, cr, cl and pl, where two sounds slide together.
5. Reading your own name and reading a text (lessons 40 and 41). "I Know My Name" and "Let's Read" close the book.

The book has a review lesson after each small family of sounds, five reviews before the final reading page, so that a child never moves to digraphs before the rhyming families have settled in.

Why phonics at Prep?

Prep is the year in which many children begin to read short words. A systematic phonics programme helps them to sound out words instead of guessing. Word families give quick success: once a child can read "at", they can read "cat", "mat" and "sat".

Prep students on the Allied School list, about five years old, and the parents and teachers who work with them. Students should have finished the single-letter sounds, as taught in the Nursery book.

How to help at home

• Say the sound, not the letter name. Then blend: c-a-t, cat.
• Make a word-family chart on the fridge: "at: cat, hat, mat, sat".
• Play "rhyme time": "What rhymes with pin?"
• For digraphs, point to the pair of letters and say the one sound together.
• Keep sessions short: one lesson at a time, with a review the next day.
