What is this book?

It follows the Nursery Numbers book and goes much further. Place value alone gets nine pages, and subtraction has its own follow-up chapter, "Subtraction Stories", so that the skill is used in word problems, not just left as bare sums.

1. Number sense (chapters 1 to 9). Numbers, place value, number names, backward counting, sets, more and less, equal, zero and ordinal numbers.
2. Operations (chapters 10 to 12). Addition (five pages), subtraction (four pages) and subtraction stories.
3. Order and measure (chapters 13 to 17). Before and after, measurement, capacity, comparison and sequence.
4. Time (chapter 18). Five pages of telling the time.
5. Shapes and space (chapters 19 to 21). 2-D shapes, 3-D shapes (six pages) and positions.

Teaching place value step by step

Place value is the most important idea in this book, and it takes nine pages for a reason. Here is a simple way to support it at home.

1. Take ten spoons or sticks and tie them into a bundle with a rubber band. Say, "This is one ten."
2. Put three loose sticks next to the bundle. Say, "One ten and three ones is thirteen."
3. Make different numbers with bundles and loose sticks and ask your child to say and write them.
4. Only then move to the book pages.

Why the "Zero" chapter matters

Zero is one page long, but it is often the idea that children find strangest. Use real examples: "There are no apples in the bowl. That is zero apples." Show that zero is also the digit that holds a place in ten and twenty.

Telling the time and shapes

For the time chapter, use a real clock and read the hour together at meals. For shapes, make a "shape hunt" around the house: a round plate, a rectangular door, a cube-shaped box.

Common mistakes

Children often write 31 for 13, or count the starting number as "one" in addition. Slow, calm counting on fingers or objects fixes both. If your child finds "more", "less" and "equal" confusing, line up two rows of objects side by side and ask which row is longer, then add or take away one object so the rows match. Seeing the idea with real things first makes the written pages in chapters 6 and 7 much less stressful, and it only takes a few minutes before bedtime.
