What is this book?

A Nursery year should include a steady routine of holding a crayon, using a fingertip and tearing paper, not only learning letters and numbers. This book builds that routine. Why drawing comes before writing in Nursery

Before a child can write the letter "a", the hand has to learn to make curves, straight lines and circles. The tracing, colouring and printing activities in Art & Drawing (B) are those first strokes in disguise. A child who has spent a term following dotted lines and filling shapes will find pencil work in Prep much easier.

A calm routine that works

• Choose a fixed, short time of day, about ten to fifteen minutes, at a table.
• Do one activity at a time and talk about the picture: "What colour is the lemon?"
• Write your child's name on the page and let them see you do it.
• Keep wet wipes close for the printing and pasting pages.

What not to worry about

At three or four years old, colours will go outside the lines, thumb prints will be messy and some pages will be left unfinished. That is normal. The aim is a happy hand that wants to hold a crayon, not a perfect page.
