What is this book?

Prep is where formal grammar words first appear by name: noun, pronoun, singular and plural. This book spreads the introduction across twenty short units, instead of putting everything in at once. Each unit takes only a page or two, and the answer key makes it practical for a parent to help on a school night.

The book in four steps

1. Letters and words (units 1 to 7). The alphabet, vowels and consonants, when to use "a" or "an", naming words, common and proper nouns, singular and plural, and alphabetical order.
2. Sentences and pointing words (units 8 to 10). What a sentence is, then "this/that" and "these/those" for things near and far.
3. Pronouns and being words (units 11 to 14). Pronouns (the longest unit, eight pages), my/your/his/her, is/am/are and questions.
4. Doing, describing and placing (units 15 to 20). Action words, using "can", describing words, opposites, masculine and feminine, and position words.

A simple four-week plan

Your school will set its own pace, but if you are helping at home, this plan keeps the units in the same order as the book.

• Week 1 (units 1 to 4): the alphabet, vowels and consonants, "a" and "an", and naming words. Name ten things in the house and say "a" or "an" before each one.
• Week 2 (units 5 to 8): common and proper nouns, singular and plural, ABC order and sentences. Ask your child to say one full sentence about their day.

Mistakes to expect

Five-year-olds often say "a apple" instead of "an apple", or mix up "he" and "she". Do not correct every slip. Repeat the right sentence back to them in a friendly voice and let them say it again.
