What is this book?
Turning individual letters into a first word is the biggest jump in learning to read Urdu. Almost half of this book is given to two-letter word building, spread across a dozen sections, because the step needs a lot of repetition. The rest introduces letter families, sight words and everyday vocabulary.

The book in four steps
- Letters first (sections 1 to 4). Introductory letters, dots, the order of the letters and the vowels.
- Letter families and word building (sections 5 to 13). The Bay group and the Hay group, with two-letter words after each, and the "mischievous" letters that behave differently.
- Reading and vocabulary (sections 14 to 19). Sight words, the names of colours and longer runs of two-letter words.
- Sounds, joining and myself (sections 20 to 25). Our Sounds, Break & Join and Join & Break, names of fruits and vegetables, and "My Introduction", where a child can read and say a few sentences about themselves.
Why so many two-letter word pages?
A child who can read "ab" or "aam" for the first time has crossed from knowing letters to reading. Repeating that step with different letters helps it stick. Sight words and picture vocabulary then give the child words they can already use in speech.
Who is it for?
Prep students on the Allied School list, about five years old, and the parents and teachers who help them. The child should have used the Nursery Urdu primer or know the letters.
How to help at home
- Say the letter, then the sound, then join two letters into a word aloud.
- Use flash cards for sight words and the names of colours and fruits.
- Take the child to a market and name the fruits and vegetables in Urdu.
- Let the child say "My Introduction" to the family: name, age, school.
- Short, daily practice works better than a long weekly one.

A ten-minute daily routine
Short and regular practice works best for Urdu word building. This routine fits into most evenings.
- Two minutes of review. Say the letters of yesterday's page.
- Five minutes of new words. Read the new two-letter words slowly, with a finger under each letter.
- Three minutes of reading aloud. Let your child read the day's words aloud to a parent, a sibling or a soft toy.
- A closing sentence. Ask your child to use one new word in a spoken sentence.
Signs of progress
You will know the book is working when your child begins to point at signs, packets and shop boards and tries to read the letters. That is the moment to celebrate, even if the child gets some words wrong. Gentle encouragement at this stage matters more than correcting every mistake.
