What is in the book?
Every page follows the same idea. An animal says "Look at me." and then names its home, for example "I live in a pond." The frog lives in a pond, the fox lives in a den, and the rest of the animals have a cave, a web, a hole or a shell. Only one word changes from page to page, and the photograph shows which one.
Because the sentence frame stays the same, a child can read the second page after hearing the first. The picture is the clue, and the first letter of the new word confirms it. A child who sees a fox in a hole in the ground and hears the "d" at the start of the word can check the letter: d for den.
The words in the book
- Words that change: den, shell, pond, web, cave, hole.
- Words that repeat: look, in, me, I, at, a.
What your child practises
According to the teaching notes, a child who reads this book can:
- understand that print carries meaning and is read from left to right and from top to bottom;
- use the first letter of a word to check what the picture shows;
- follow two lines of simple repeated text with a finger, including the return sweep from the end of one line back to the start of the next.
Reading it together, step by step
- Give your child the book and read the title together.
- Say one sentence about it: the animals in this book live in different homes, let us see where each one lives.
- On the frog page, point under each word as you read "Look at me", then "I live in a pond", slowly enough for your child's finger to keep up.
- On the fox page, ask where he lives, then put a finger under the first letter of "den" and say its sound together.
- Praise careful pointing, then let your child read a page alone.
Small activities that make it stick
- Where do we live? Talk about your own home and ask what it is called. Draw it and write a caption such as "I live in a house."
- Home or habitat? Cut out animal pictures from old magazines and match each to its home.
- Garden hunt. Look for a web on a bush, a hole in the wall or a shell on the path.
- Habitat talk. Explain that a home gives an animal food and a safe place to rest.
About the Pink A band
Pink A is the very first step of Cambridge Reading Adventures. According to the publisher, books at this level have roughly thirty to sixty words, bright pictures and lots of repetition, so a child recognises the same words again and again and feels like a reader from the first page. Each book carries teaching notes by Sue Bodman and Glen Franklin.
Who, when, where and why
- Who: Play Group children of about three, and the adults who read with them.
- When: at the start of Play Group, and again and again at home.
- Where: at school, on the sofa at bedtime, and outdoors.
- Why: to build early reading habits, vocabulary and the idea that words carry meaning.
- How: point, say, check, repeat.
Questions to ask while you read
- Which animal do you like best, and where does it live?
- Would a bear fit in a shell? Why not?
- Which home is the smallest and which is the biggest?
- Can you find the word "in" on every page?
- Where do we keep our own things safe at home?
A tip for parents: do not rush through the book. Three-year-olds learn most from the second and third reading, when they can say the sentence before you do. Let your child "read" the page to a soft toy, even if the words are from memory; that is a real step towards reading.
