What happens in the book
The girl wants a good picture of her family. On page 2 she says "Here is my dad." The pages that follow bring mum, Grandpa and Grandma, and the sentence frame stays the same: "Here is my ..." The words "Here", "is" and "my" are on every page. In every photo, the pet parrot has somehow landed in the wrong place, and children giggle at each new spot.
At the very end, the word "And" is added to the pattern. The teaching notes say this is on purpose: it gives a gentle challenge to children who are checking that each spoken word matches exactly one printed word.
Names such as Grandpa and Grandma start with capital letters, so the book is also a first lesson in noticing that some words begin with a big letter.
What your child practises
The teaching notes list these outcomes. A child who reads this book can:
- understand that print carries meaning and is read from left to right;
- begin to notice capital letters at the start of names;
- follow one line of simple repeated text.
Reading it together, step by step
- Give your child the book, read the title and ask them to point to it.
- Say: the girl is trying to take photos of her family, but her pet bird keeps getting in the way.
- On page 2, read "Here is my dad" slowly while your child points to each word.
- On page 4, ask who she is photographing now and check the first letter (mum starts with the sound m).
- Look through pages 6 to 13 to make sure your child knows the family words, then let them read a page alone.
Things to do after reading
- Be the photographer. Take real pictures of the family with your child as the photographer, and caption each one: "Here is my ___."
- Swap the parrot. What other animal could get in the way? A cat? A hen?
- Family words. Make a page of "mum, dad, Grandpa, Grandma" with a drawing for each.
- Barbecue menu. The notes suggest planning a garden barbecue and writing the menu as a list; children can illustrate it.
About the Pink A band
Pink A is the very first band of Cambridge Reading Adventures, with about thirty to sixty words per book, lively pictures and lots of repetition. Each book carries notes by Sue Bodman and Glen Franklin.
Who, when, where and why
- Who: Play Group children of about three, with a parent or teacher.
- When: at the start of Play Group, and any time at home.
- Where: at school, on the sofa, and at family gatherings.
- Why: to learn family words and capital letters and to practise matching spoken words to printed ones.
- How: read, point, laugh, repeat.
Questions to ask while you read
- Who is in the photo on this page?
- Where has the parrot landed this time?
- What do you think the parrot wants?
- Which letter does "Grandpa" start with, and is it big or small?
- Whose photo would you like to take next?
A tip for parents: this book is a perfect excuse to print or show a few family photos. Ask your child to say the sentence "Here is my ___" for each person, and notice together how names such as Grandma and Grandpa begin with a capital letter. Children remember a word better when it belongs to someone they love.
