Who Lays Eggs? by Claire Llewellyn is not a story. It is a first fact book, and that is exactly why it is worth having. A Nursery child sees a butterfly on the cover, opens the book and learns where a bird, a bee, a wasp, a lizard and a snake put their eggs so they stay safe. It is a Cambridge Reading Adventures reader on the LGS Nursery list on this site for the 2027-28 session.

Exams Book House, Shop Number 4, Al Fazal Market, Urdu Bazar, Lahore, supplies it with cash on delivery across Pakistan and delivery to the Gulf countries.

Quick facts

What is the book about?

The book answers the question in its title, one animal at a time. A bird lays its eggs in a nest, a bee and a wasp use their own hidden places, a lizard lays eggs in soil or under a log, and a snake does something similar. Each page names the animal in a simple caption, shows it in a photograph or picture, and tells us where the eggs go and why that place is safe.

According to the teaching notes, this kind of text works differently from a story. It talks about whole groups of animals, for example all lizards, not only the one in the picture, so an adult should help the child see that. Three lines of text appear on each page, which is a real step up for a young reader, so it is best to rehearse the page together before the child tries alone.

Words your child will meet

What your child practises

The publisher's notes list these outcomes. A child who reads the book can:

  1. know that print carries meaning and is read from left to right and from top to bottom;
  2. read some high-frequency words and use first sounds to work out simple words;
  3. show how information can be found in a non-fiction text.

Reading it together, step by step

  1. Read the title and say: in this book we find out which animals lay eggs and where they put them to keep them safe.
  2. On page 2, check that your child knows the animal names. Give the ones they do not know and use first letters (bee and wasp, lizard and snake).
  3. On page 4, ask where the bird lays her eggs. Put a finger under "nest" and look for another word that sounds the same.
  4. Ask: do you think the eggs are safe? Can you find the word that says "safe"?
  5. Turn through the other pages and let your child name each animal.

Activities for after the book

Older children can use the same book later to start charts about predators and prey.

Why a fact book at Nursery?

Most first readers are stories. A fact book shows children that print can also answer questions about the world. It builds early vocabulary for science and introduces a different way of reading: you do not need to follow a plot, you look for the information.

Who, when, where and why

Questions to ask while you read

  1. Which animals in the book lay eggs? Which ones surprised you?
  2. Where does the bird put her eggs?
  3. Why might a log or a leaf be a good place for an egg?
  4. Can you find the word "eggs" on each page?
  5. Are all eggs the same size and colour? How could we find out?

A tip for parents: because the book is about facts, let your child use the captions as clues. Cover the caption, ask your child to name the animal from the picture, and then check by reading the caption together. This teaches that print and pictures can confirm each other.
