What is A Hot Day about?
It is a hot day and all the animals want to cool off. One by one they jump into the water: the mouse first, then a turtle, and then the others. The story is told with just one line of text on each page, and each page changes just one word, so a beginner can read the page after looking at the picture. Then the big hippo jumps in, and something happens that every child can predict from the pictures and the word "Splash", which gets bigger as the animals get bigger.
The adult's notes explain that the story invites children to work out what has happened from the pictures, which is an early form of inference. Pre-readers can also use the pictures and the small first letters of words to check what they read.
What does Pink A band mean?
Cambridge Reading Adventures arranges its books in colour bands, from the easiest to the more difficult. Pink A is the first band. Books at this level have very short texts, large type, wide spaces between words and pictures that support every page. The aim is to teach the basics of reading: which way to turn the pages, that print is read from left to right, and that each spoken word matches one printed word.
What do the teaching notes cover?
The teaching notes at the back of this copy help an adult use the book with a child. They include:
- Developing comprehension. How the pictures help the child understand what happens.
- Grammar and sentence structure. One line per page, with one word changed each time.
- Word meaning and spelling. The little words "in" and "the" repeat on each page, so children learn to recognise them quickly.
- A science link. Water play, such as testing how many bricks fit in a pot before the water spills over.
- Learning outcomes. Children can turn pages properly, understand that print goes from left to right, match each spoken word with a printed word and find known high-frequency words in a line of text.
- A guided reading lesson. Talk about being hot, introduce the cover, track the title with a finger and check words using the first letter and the picture.
Who should buy this book?
- Parents of Pre Nursery, Nursery, KG and Class 1 children who are starting to read. Which class the book suits depends on your school's reading plan.
- Teachers who run guided reading groups and need a first-level title.
- Tutors who work with young beginners, including children learning English as a second language.
Why this book?
Beginner readers need success. A book with one line per page and a clear picture lets them read every word and feel proud. The change of one word on each page keeps their attention, and the surprise at the end makes them laugh. The teaching notes also make life easier for parents who are not sure how to help.
When is it used?
Schools use Pink A readers at the very start of the reading journey, usually in a short daily session. Children often read the same book several times, which builds confidence.
How to read it with your child
- Look at the cover and ask "What do you think will happen on a hot day?"
- Let your child hold the book and turn the pages.
- Point to each word as you read the first page aloud, then let your child point as you read together.
- Ask your child to find "in" and "the" on every page.
- Stop at the word "Splash" and talk about why it gets bigger.
- After the book, try a bowl of water and some objects to see what makes the water spill.
