What is this book?
Sim comes across an elephant with a problem. She tries a number of ways to help until she finds one that lets the elephant give rides to his friends. Sim's reward is a bird's-eye view of the rainforest, because she gets the first ride. The story is built on three attempts, with the solution on the third, but the conversation between Sim and the elephant sounds natural.
The notes were written by Sue Bodman and Glen Franklin, and they point to contractions in speech, time phrases and longer words as the main language features.
Words and sentences
Contractions in speech (I'm, What's, can't, didn't, Let's) and time phrases such as Every day and This time appear throughout. Long words such as enormous, exploring and favourite need the reader to find the parts of the word. Different words for said, such as asked, sobbed and laughed, show feelings more exactly. The storybook phrase "and off she ran" is on page 5.
What a child can learn from it
- Follow the print across several lines without pointing.
- Work out new words by finding chunks they already know, using the meaning and grammar.
- Talk about why a character acts as they do and explain the reasons.
A guided reading lesson to follow at home
- Read the blurb and ask your child to predict what the book will be about, and whether it is fiction or non-fiction, with reasons.
- Say: in this book Sim comes across an enormous elephant on her daily walk. The elephant is very upset. Let's find out why.
- On page 3, find enormous and read it in three parts, e-nor-mous; check the meaning with the picture.
- On page 4, ask your child to find where the elephant says why he is crying and to tell it back in their own words.
- On page 5, practise the phrase "and off she ran" and find it in the text.
Links beyond the book
For geography, Sim gets an aerial view of the rainforest. Look at your own area on a map app from above and draw a map of a place you know. For science, Sim uses the elephant's trunk to climb onto his back: what is an elephant's trunk really for? Use books or websites to find out and write a short fact page.
