What is this book?
The teaching notes describe the book as a reworking of a traditional tale. A cook gives chase to his pancake, which jumped out of the pan and ran away. Along the way the pancake helps a series of characters, and they all give chase too. Then the tale changes direction: they do not want to eat the pancake, they want to say thank you.
The notes are signed by Sue Bodman and Glen Franklin. They point out that the sentences get longer as new characters join the chase and that speech goes on for more than one sentence, which is good practice for a Blue band reader.
Words and sentences
- Comparatives: faster and biggest.
- A repeated phrase: faster and faster, and the pattern The cook wants to eat me.
- New words that can be worked out from the context.
- Rhythm: the repeated chorus makes the story easy to read aloud, a little like a song.
What a child can learn from it
- Solve unfamiliar words using the print and an understanding of the text.
- Keep reading accurately across more lines of text on a page.
- Comment on events, characters and ideas and link them to their own experience.
A guided reading lesson to follow at home
- Read the title and the blurb together. Say: the cook made the big pancake. Why might lots of people run after it?
- Ask: do you know another story where many people join in a chase? If your child knows The Gingerbread Man, retell it briefly.
- On pages 2 and 3, talk about how big the pancake is and lead your child to the word rolled.
- On pages 4 and 5, point out faster and faster and ask why the pancake is getting faster.
- Notice the repeated sentence "The cook wants to eat me" and ask what will happen next.
Links beyond the book
The pancake uses its material properties to help people: it breaks a lady's fall, it floats and it can stick over a hole. Try household materials and see which would work in each situation. For food technology, follow a simple recipe and make pancakes together. It is an easy, delicious follow-up.
About the Blue band
By Blue band a child is expected to read longer lines of text, cope with speech marks and recognise many common words without sounding them out, so the level suits a confident Class 1 reader.
