What is this book?
According to the teaching notes, three young brothers go to the seaside with their parents. The big brothers, Rehan and Aahil, have to look after Zayan. Zayan cannot surf or skateboard or sand-board, but the twist in the story is that he finds he can do something his bigger brothers cannot. It reflects the experience of children who have older and younger brothers and sisters.
Green band is the stage at which a Class 1 reader is expected to read longer lines of print without pointing with a finger, and to work out new words by looking for chunks they already know.
What the teaching notes say
The notes page is a short guide in three parts.
- Developing reading comprehension. A summary of the story and the idea that children can think about how older and younger children feel.
- Grammar and sentence structure. Contractions such as can't and let's that sound like natural speech, and longer sentences with adverbial words and phrases such as today and again and again.
- Word meaning and spelling. Longer words such as skateboarding, where a child has to spot parts, and topic words such as sand dunes and surfing.
Learning outcomes
The page lists three things a child can do after reading the book:
- track accurately across several lines of print without pointing;
- solve new words by spotting known chunks inside the word, while using the meaning and the grammar;
- discuss why a character acts as they do and explain the reasons.
A guided reading lesson to follow at home
- Talk about the beach and the sea first. Who has a younger brother or sister? When do you have to look after them?
- Read the title and the blurb together, then look at the picture on the cover.
- On page 2, find the word surfing and split it into surf and ing.
- Find the place where Mum says "you have to take Zayan with you" and read it in Mum's voice.
- On page 5, ask why the big brothers say "No more surfing for us today". Because Zayan cannot surf, they have to find something else to do.
- On the next page, discuss how Zayan might feel about trying skateboarding.
Links beyond the book
For science, the story can start a talk about forces and momentum: what makes a skateboard go fast down a slope? For social science, it is about looking after a sibling, caring for each other and valuing that different people have different strengths. A simple activity is to ask your child to draw one thing each family member is good at.
Why this book?
- A warm, funny story about brothers that Class 1 children recognise.
- Contractions and longer sentences give practice with natural speech.
- Teaching notes in the book tell parents exactly how to help.
Who is it for, and when is it used?
It is for Class 1 children on the LACAS list, about six years old. It is read at school in guided reading and at home as extra practice during the session. Ten minutes a night is plenty: read it over several evenings, asking one question each time.
How to help at home
- Let your child read a page, then ask "why did he say that?".
- Look for the contractions (can't, let's) and say the full words.
- Split long words into chunks with your fingers.
- Talk about what each brother is good at.
- Retell the story in three sentences: beginning, middle and end.
