What is Arif Goes Shopping about?
Mum and her young son Arif go to the supermarket. The text is built on one simple, repeated sentence pattern: Mum picks something from the shelf and puts it in the trolley. The items are everyday foods that children know, such as apples, oranges, milk, juice, rice and pizza. Arif helps by handing things to his mother, and the pictures show how much he enjoys it. But shopping is tiring work, and by the end of the book it is Arif who needs to rest.
The adult notes explain that although the words tell us what Mum puts in the trolley, the real story is about Arif and his help. This is a good example of how children read pictures as well as words, and it invites them to talk about what they notice.
Why this story works for beginners
- A familiar setting. Most children have been to a shop with a parent, so they know what is happening.
- Repeated sentences. The same pattern on each page lets a beginner predict the words, which gives a feeling of success.
- Two lines of text on each page. After the first reader, with a single line, children now practise moving their eyes from the end of one line to the start of the next.
- Everyday vocabulary. Names of foods are easy to link with the pictures and with the first letters.
- A Pakistani family feel. The mother's headscarf and the clothes of the boy will look familiar to many children in our country.
What do the teaching notes cover?
The notes at the back help parents and teachers use the book. They include:
- Reading comprehension. The story is about what happens when Mum and Arif go shopping, and the real story is Arif.
- Grammar and sentence structure. The text is well spaced for matching each spoken word to a printed word, and two lines per page help with the return sweep. For children learning English as an additional language, the notes suggest practising the sentences aloud before reading.
- Word meaning and spelling. Use the first letters of the food words (apples, oranges, milk, juice, rice, pizza) to check predictions, and learn the frequent words "Mum", "in", "the" and "puts".
- Curriculum links. Maths (how much did each item cost? work out change using local money) and geography (what do we eat? make a block graph of favourite foods).
- Learning outcomes. Children understand that print carries meaning and is read from left to right and top to bottom, use first letters to check picture information and track two lines of simple repeated text.
- A guided reading lesson. The adult introduces the book, gives a brief orientation and checks words page by page.
Who should buy this book?
- Parents of Pre Nursery, Nursery, KG and Class 1 children who are beginning to read. Which class the book suits depends on your school's reading plan.
- Teachers who run guided reading and need a first-level title.
- Tutors who work with young beginners, including children learning English as an additional language.
When is it used?
Pink A readers are used right at the start of reading, in short daily sessions. Children often read the same book three or four times, which is exactly what builds confidence.
How to read it with your child
- Look at the cover and ask "Where do you think they are?"
- Read the first page aloud and point to each word. Then let your child point as you read together.
- On each new page, ask "What does Mum put in the trolley now?" and let your child guess before you read.
- Check the guess by looking at the first letter of the word.
- After the book, make a shopping list together at home and go to the shop to find the items.
- Draw a picture of your favourite food from the shop.
