What is this book?
Many Class 1 children meet their first proper information book here. Instead of following a story from the first page to the last, they learn to dip into a book, find the part they want and read facts about the world. That is a skill they will use for the rest of their school life.
The book is a report that explores different kinds of plants around the world. Features such as labels and captions give extra information, and it has a contents page, an index and a glossary. Plants such as the redwood, the flytrap and rainforest plants are examples of the long words the reader meets, and the glossary explains technical words.
How a non-fiction reader works
- Contents page: shows what is inside and on which page.
- Labels and captions: short notes beside pictures that give extra facts.
- Index: helps a reader find one topic fast.
- Glossary: explains difficult words at the back.
A story is read from beginning to end. A report like this is not: the child chooses a page, finds the topic and reads for facts.
Language to notice
Reports use the present tense ("A fly lands on the leaves. The leaves snap shut.") and talk about groups of things in general, such as "plants that live in the rainforest". On the Venus flytrap pages the sentences are short and sharp, like the plant itself. Words such as redwood, flytrap and rainforest are made of two parts and can be read in chunks.
What a child can learn from it
- Reread a sentence to be sure of the meaning after working out a new or unusual word.
- Understand how a non-chronological report is built.
- Notice changes in sentence length and why the author chose them.
Try this at home
- Talk first about growing things: have you helped plant a seed or water a plant?
- Read the title and ask what kinds of plants you expect to find.
- Practise using the contents and index to find the Venus flytrap pages, then break flytrap into fly and trap.
- Notice the short sentences and talk about why the writer chose them.
- Plant a fast-growing seed such as a sunflower or bean and measure it every few days.
Links beyond the book
For science, link the book to plants growing near you: visit a garden or nursery and look for plants that catch insects or grow very tall. For writing, borrow the pattern of an old tale such as The Enormous Turnip and invent your own story about a giant plant, such as a gigantic cactus.
