What is this book?
It is a handwriting book more than a reading book. The aim is that each letter has been written, traced and repeated by the child, so that the hand remembers the shape. The contents page is printed in Urdu, and the book has a clear structure.
How the book is organised
| Part | What it contains |
|---|---|
| Letters 1 to 21 | "Harf ki Likhai": full handwriting practice for each individual letter |
| Letters 22 to 38 | "Harf ka Ta'aruf": an introduction to each remaining letter |
| 39 | "Murakkab Huroof ka Ta'aruf": an introduction to compound, joined letters |
| 40 | "Tasveer ka Pehla Harf": match the picture to its first letter |
| 41 | "Huroof ki Dohrai": a full review of the letters, pages 48 to 61 |
Why the pacing makes sense
The first twenty-one letters get full writing drills, because they are the ones a child will use all the time once they begin forming words. The remaining seventeen are introduced for recognition first, which suits a Nursery child better than drilling all 38 at once. The book closes with picture-matching and a long review, so a parent can see progress by the last page instead of repeating the same exercise.
What children practise
- Pencil control: tracing curves, dots and lines in the direction Urdu is written, from right to left.
- Letter shapes: the many shapes of the Urdu alphabet, from the simple alif to letters with dots and hooks.
- Sounds and first letters: matching a picture to the first letter of its name, which links the sound to the shape.
- Joining letters: a first look at how letters change shape when they join.
Who is it for?
Nursery students on the Allied School list, about three to four years old, and the parents and teachers who help them. A soft pencil is best.
Why this book?
- It starts with the hand, the way young children learn.
- Writing the first group of letters until they are comfortable gives a solid base for reading in Prep.
- The final review gives parents something to see and celebrate.
How to help at home
- Sit with your child and say the name and sound of each letter before they trace it.
- Trace with a finger first, then with a pencil.
- Short, daily sessions of ten minutes work better than one long one.
- Let your child practise the letter on a slate, in sand or in the air.
- Find a letter on a sign, a book or a food packet, and read it out.

Teaching Urdu handwriting: a few simple rules
Urdu is written from right to left, and many letters change shape depending on where they sit. A Nursery child needs time and a calm routine.
- Start in the air. Let your child "write" the letter in the air with a finger, then on a tray of sand or flour, and only then with a pencil.
- One letter at a time. Say its name, its sound and one word that starts with it.
- Hold the pencil comfortably. A short, thick pencil is easier for small hands.
- Revise first. Each day, begin with yesterday's letter before starting the next.
- Stop while it is still fun. Ten minutes of happy writing is worth more than half an hour of tears.
Do not worry if letters look wobbly. Neat shapes come with practice, and the Urdu primer is designed to give plenty of it, with the letters written out in order across the pages.
