What is this book?

It is a first structured look at community, nature and the environment for a five-year-old. Compared with the Nursery edition, Community Workers and Cultural Awareness are new, plants get several chapters, and Pollution and Save the Water appear for the first time. This is environmental awareness that is just right for Prep age.

1. Me and my people (chapters 1 to 4). Myself, my family, cultural awareness and community workers.
2. Senses and transport (chapters 5 and 6). Nine pages on the senses and seven on transport, the two longest early chapters.
3. Living things (chapters 7 to 12). Living and non-living, then five plant chapters: environments, local plants, growth, food and why plants matter.
4. Animals (chapters 13 to 18). Animals in water, warm places, the air and everywhere.
5. Weather, seasons and places (chapters 19 to 21).
6. Caring for our world (chapters 22 to 25). Pollution (the longest chapter at seven pages), uses of water, saving water and technology.

Why this step up matters

A three-year-old needs to meet words such as "plant" and "animal". A five-year-old can start asking why. The Prep book gives reasons: what plants need, why animals live where they do, why water matters and what pollution does.
