What is this book?

It is a book to talk through with a small child. Each chapter answers a question a three- or four-year-old actually asks: who am I, who is around me, what is alive and what is not, and what is the weather today? Only then does it go outward to seasons, places and technology.

How the chapters flow

1. Me (chapters 1 to 3). Myself, the human body and feelings. Short chapters of two pages each.
2. My people and my senses (chapters 4 and 5). The community, and the five senses, which has nine pages because children love to explore what they can see, hear, smell, taste and touch.
3. Moving and living (chapters 6 to 9). Transportation, living and non-living things, plants and animals. Animals gets ten pages, plants seven.
4. Weather and places (chapters 10 to 12). Weather, seasons and places, with twelve pages on places.
5. Resources and daily life (chapters 13 to 16). Natural resources, energy, a day's routine and technology.

Why start here and not with reading or writing?

At Nursery age a child is still working out where they fit: in their family, in their senses, in their day. This book answers exactly that, in the order a three- or four-year-old asks the questions. It builds vocabulary and curiosity, which feed later reading and science.

Who is it for?

Nursery students on the Allied School list, about three to four years old, and parents who want a "what's this?" book at bedtime. It can be used alongside classwork or at home.

How to help at home

• Look at each page and let your child name what they see.
• After "Senses", play a game: close your eyes and guess the object by touch or smell.
• Walk around the neighbourhood and point to shops, vehicles, plants and animals.
• Keep a weather chart and a "what we did today" chat at bedtime for chapter 15.
• Ask "Is it alive or not alive?" about everyday things.

Turning each chapter into a home activity

This book covers sixteen topics from "Myself" to "Technology". Almost every one can become a five-minute activity at home.

• Myself and the human body: name body parts while dressing and look in a mirror.
• My feelings: ask, "Are you happy, sad or angry today?" and let your child choose.

Do not try to finish a chapter in one sitting. One chapter can last a whole week, with a picture-talk on the first day, a small activity in the middle and a quick "what do you remember?" at the end. At this age, learning is talking and noticing. Ask questions, wait for the answer and add one new word each time, and the book's pictures will feel like a conversation instead of a lesson.
