What is this book?
Phonics teaches children that every letter has a sound, and that sounds can be joined into words. Stage 2 is for a three- or four-year-old who is starting to connect a shape on the page with a sound in their mouth, one letter at a time.

How the book works
- One letter at a time. Each letter has its own two-page block, so a Nursery class can spend a whole lesson on a single letter instead of rushing the alphabet in a week.
- Alphabet order, a to z. Children and parents can see exactly how far they have come.
- A long review. The closing Letters Review, of nine pages, is what turns "I recognise some letters" into "I know the whole alphabet". That matters most right before a child moves up to Prep.
Teaching tips for each letter block
- Say the sound first, not the name: "a" as in apple, not "ay". Sounds are what a child needs to read.
- Look at the letter shape and trace it in the air with a finger.
- Name three objects that start with the sound and say them together.
- Do the two pages in short bursts, five to ten minutes.
- Review the letter the next day by asking for the sound before opening the book.
Why phonics at Nursery?
Phonics gives children a way into reading that does not depend on guessing. A child who knows the sounds of the letters can begin to build simple words in Prep and Class 1. A relaxed, game-like approach at Nursery keeps learning fun.
Who is it for?
Nursery students on the Allied School list, about three to four years old, and the parents and teachers who work with them. A pencil, crayons and a little patience are all that is needed.
How to help at home
- Sing the alphabet and then sing the sounds.
- Hunt for objects around the house that start with the letter of the day.
- Make letters with play dough or in a tray of sand.
- Point out the letter on signs and packets when you are out.
- Praise effort, not perfect handwriting.

How to practise letter sounds at home
The aim of phonics is to link a written letter to the sound it makes. A few simple rules make home practice easier.
- Say the sound, not the name. For the letter b, say the short "buh", not "bee". The sound is what a child needs to read words later.
- Keep it short. Two or three letters a day is enough. Revise yesterday's letter before starting a new one.
- Use the senses. Let your child trace the letter in sand, on a tray of flour, or on your back with a finger.
- Look for the letter. On a walk or in the kitchen, say, "Can you find something that starts with m?"
- Finish with the review. The book closes with a letters review, so keep the last days of the term for revision, not new work.
Children learn at different speeds. If your child is stuck on one letter, give it a few extra days and return to it with a song or a picture.
