What is this book?
Nursery English is about letters, sounds, words and confidence. This book is built so that every unit has the same simple shape: two new letters, a few picture-based topics (transport, colours, parts of the body, family, fruit, vegetables), poems with actions, tracing pages and a short speaking task.
The contents page is a learning-outcomes map. For every unit it says what a child should be able to do: recognise, read and write the two letters, use vocabulary related to them, recite a poem with actions and talk about a topic. This makes it useful for parents and teachers who want to know what is being practised.
There are also small stories (The sad king in unit 6, The race in unit 9) and simple reading (three-letter words in unit 5, words and sentences in units 7 and 13), so reading starts gently in Nursery.

The learning outcomes in short
Across the book the same outcomes return, which helps a child to feel safe:
- Recognise, read and write the two letters of the unit.
- Use vocabulary linked to the letters: for example transport for A and B, colours for C and D, fruit and animals for I and J.
- Recite poems with actions, such as "Head and shoulders", "Hot cross buns", "Twinkle, twinkle, little star" and "I'm a teapot".
- Listen, ask and answer questions (units 6, 9), give instructions (unit 8) and talk about family, home and school.
- Read simple words and sentences from unit 5 onwards.
The 14 units in four steps
Units 1 to 4 (pages 2–26). A, B to G, H. Topics are close to the child: transport, colours, body, family, home and greetings. These four units are short, 6 pages each, so the first weeks are light.
Units 5 to 8 (pages 27–57). I, J to O, P. Reading begins with three-letter words. Units 7 and 8 have many poems and the "magic words" (please, thank you).
Units 9 to 13 (pages 58–93). Q, R to Y, Z. The topics widen: recycling, the park, vegetables, winter and food, with a recipe corner in unit 13.
Unit 14 (page 94). Vowels and consonants and the use of a / an, which is a first grammar lesson.
Why this book?
- Every unit teaches two letters, so 26 letters are covered in 13 units with time for practice.
- Poems with actions and short stories keep Nursery children active and happy.
- The tracing pages build writing skills, not only reading skills.
- The detailed contents show parents what each unit practises.
Who is it for, and when is it used?
Who: Nursery children (age three to four) in schools that use Oxford We Learn English, and their parents. When: through the school year. Roughly one unit takes two or three weeks, so a school finishes 14 units in a year. Page numbers: unit 5 begins on page 27, unit 10 on page 65 and the last unit on page 94.
How to help at home
- Sing a poem from the book every day and add the actions.
- Trace the letter in the air, in sand or in flour before writing it.
- Find objects at home that begin with the letter of the week.
- Ask your child to greet you with "Good morning" and "Thank you".
- Read a very short word list together once the child reaches unit 5.
