How the book is paced
- 0 to 10 get two pages each, which gives a small child room to trace the numeral, count matching objects and colour.
- 11 to 20 get a page each, because once a child has the idea of a numeral, repeating the routine is enough.
- Counting, sequencing and backward counting follow: skills that teachers rely on before any addition begins.
- Shapes, a review and pairs of tricky ideas. Six pages of 2D shapes, a review, and separate short sections for before and after, more and less, and comparison.
- Addition and subtraction come late and are short (three and two pages), only after the groundwork.
- Positions, measurement, time and days of the week close the book: the everyday maths a Nursery child will actually use.
Who is it for?
Nursery students on the Allied School list, about three to four years old, and parents helping them practise at home.
Why this book?
- One numeral at a time keeps things calm and clear.
- The animal characters make counting friendly.
- The last pages link maths to daily life: time, position and the week.
How to help at home
- Count everything: steps, spoons, fingers. Touch each object once.
- Trace numerals in the air or on a tray of sand before writing them.
- Say the days of the week every morning.
- Do one or two pages at a time, not the whole number in one go.

A gentle counting routine for Nursery
Most children can say numbers aloud before they understand what a number means. This book helps with the second part, and a few habits at home make the difference.
- Touch each thing once. When counting, let your child point at each object and move it aside. This is called one-to-one counting and it is the base of all later maths.
- Count real things. Spoons, stairs, shoes and grapes are better than any picture.
- Meet zero early. Show an empty plate and say, "How many biscuits? None. That is zero."
- Look before counting. Show two or three dots for a second and ask, "How many?" Seeing small groups at a glance is a skill that grows with practice.
- Write after counting. Let the child trace the numeral with a finger first, then with a pencil.
Do not push for speed. A Nursery child who counts slowly and correctly is ahead of one who rushes. Five happy minutes a day is better than one long, tiring session.
