What is this book?

The inside page we photographed is the same Huroof-e-Tahajji page as the first-term book: the alphabet, the letters that do not have half forms, and the half forms of the other letters. Opening the second-term book with the same letter page tells us that the second term begins with a revision of the whole alphabet, which is a good plan for a five-year-old who has had a break.

In Term 2 the emphasis moves from knowing the letters to using them: building more words, reading short sentences, and writing short pieces.

Revise first, then go forward

Spend the first week of the term looking at the letter page again: say all the letters, point at the half forms, and find the letters that do not join. If your child still hesitates on a letter, give it extra time before moving on.

Two-letter and three-letter words

A good second-term goal is to read and write short words: two-letter words such as آم or با, and three-letter words such as بات and کام. Build them with letter cards, say them slowly and then quickly, and use each in a spoken sentence.

Joining and breaking

Breaking a word into its letters, and joining letters into a word, are skills for both reading and spelling. Do both games on paper: write a word, write its letters apart; then write the letters apart and ask the child to join them.

Writing short pieces

Creative writing at Prep means one or two sentences about a picture. Ask your child to say the sentence aloud first, then you write it in light pencil and they trace over it. By the end of the term many children can write the first word themselves.
