What is this book?
The book picks up where Class 1 stopped. Instead of numbers to 100, a seven-year-old now works with numbers to 1000, learns what the hundreds, tens and ones digits mean, and adds and subtracts numbers that need regrouping. Multiplication begins with the tables of 3 and 4 and division with dividing by 3 and 4, and the later chapters bring in length in metres and centimetres, mass in kilograms and grams, capacity in litres, and two-dimensional shapes.
The routine of each chapter is the same as in Class 1, so a child who used last year's book will know how to work with this one.

How the chapters build on each other
- Numbers to 1000 come first, because every later chapter depends on place value.
- Adding and subtracting within 1000 uses that place value, and ends with estimating.
- Multiplication and division (the tables of 3 and 4, then dividing by 3 and 4) follow, so that sums can be done by grouping.
- Measures come next: length, mass and capacity, each with real-life problems.
- Shapes close the list: straight and curved lines, parallel and perpendicular lines, semicircles and quarter circles, patterns, area and perimeter.
A note for parents
Class 2 is often the year a child decides whether they "like" maths. Short daily practice, a calm voice and real objects make the difference. When your child makes a mistake, ask them to explain their thinking, because the error is usually a small misunderstanding of place value.
Why this book?
- A clear step up from Class 1 with the same teaching routine.
- Place value is built carefully before regrouping and multiplication.
- Real-life measures (metres, kilograms, litres) make maths useful.
Who is it for, and when is it used?
It is for Class 2 children at Army Public Schools, about seven years old. It is the textbook used in class during the session, and the Practice Workbook is its written-practice partner. Parents use it at home to revise topics before tests.
How to help at home
- Write three-digit numbers on cards and ask your child to say which digit is the tens digit.
- Measure things around the house with a ruler and a kitchen scale.
- Practise the tables of 3 and 4 with skip-counting songs.
- Use coins to make number sentences for adding and subtracting.
- Ask your child to teach you a chapter in their own words.
