Quick facts

What is this book?

The book begins with numbers to 10 000 and the idea of place value in thousands, hundreds, tens and ones. It then moves to adding and subtracting within 10 000 with estimation and real-life problems, and gives a long chapter to multiplication and division, with tables of 6, 7, 8 and 9 and division with and without regrouping and with remainders.

Length, mass and capacity follow, each in two units (for example metres and centimetres), and the fractions chapter closes the printed list.

Why Class 3 is a turning point

Tables and division are the first topics in primary maths that cannot be done by counting on fingers. A child who knows their tables well finds fractions, measures and later algebra much easier. That is why this book spends so many pages on the "Multiplication and Division" chapter, with tables, grouping, quotient and remainder, and real-life problems.

Fractions in Class 3

The last chapter in the list begins with proper fractions, improper fractions and mixed numbers, then moves to equivalent fractions, comparing and ordering them, and adding and subtracting like fractions. A fraction wall or paper strips at home make these ideas much easier to see.

Why this book?

Who is it for, and when is it used?

It is for Class 3 children at Army Public Schools, about eight years old. It is the textbook used in class during the session, and the Practice Workbook is its written-practice partner. Parents use it at home to check what has been taught and to prepare for term tests.
