What is this book?
A Class 1 child arrives from Pre 1 knowing a few numbers and some shapes. This book turns that into real arithmetic over one year. It begins with numbers to 20, moves on to addition and subtraction, adds positions, shapes and patterns, then measures lengths, masses and capacities, and finally stretches numbers to 40 and then to 100.
Each chapter follows one routine. The same routine in every chapter means a six-year-old always knows what to expect, and a parent can follow the lesson without being a maths teacher.

How every lesson is built
- Chapter opener – a picture page that starts a talk about the topic.
- In Focus – short questions that show what the child already knows.
- Let's Learn – the idea is taught with real objects first, then with pictures, then with numbers.
- Activity Time – a game or a small group task.
- Practice – a few questions to check the lesson at once.
Teaching with objects first, pictures second and numbers last is a gentle way into arithmetic, because the child never meets a symbol without first seeing what it stands for.
The year in four steps
- Small numbers (chapters 1 to 3): counting, comparing and ordering up to 20, then adding and taking away within 20.
- Space and shape (chapters 4 to 6): positions such as left and right, shapes and patterns, and measuring length, mass, capacity and temperature.
- Bigger numbers (chapters 7 to 9): counting to 40 and then to 100, with place value in tens and ones.
- Bigger sums (chapter 10): adding and subtracting within 100.
Why this book?
- One teaching routine in every chapter, so a Class 1 child feels safe with the book.
- Objects, then pictures, then numbers: the idea comes before the symbol.
- The full chapter and lesson list is shown here, so you know exactly what the year contains.
Who is it for, and when is it used?
It is for Class 1 children at Army Public Schools, about six years old. It is used in class from the first weeks of the session and goes with the Practice Workbook, which gives the written practice. The book is used at school, and also at home when a parent revises a topic with the child in the evening.
How to help at home
- Count real things every day: stairs, spoons, shoes. Stop at 20, then at 40, then at 100 as the year goes on.
- Ask "which is more?" and "which is less?" at meals.
- Play "left and right" games on the way to school.
- Read the chapter opener together and let your child talk about the picture before the lesson.
- Do the Practice questions the same evening as the lesson, while it is fresh.
