What is this book?

General knowledge in Class 2 mixes social studies, science and character education. The book starts close to home with Pakistan, villages and cities, and the roles and responsibilities of people. It then looks at nature, water, plants, animals, farming and looking after the Earth's resources, adds a unit on heat and light, and finishes with five units about people: helping others, professions, respecting differences, forgiveness and fairness.

Each unit is short, between four and ten pages, which suits a seven-year-old who learns best from pictures, talk and small activities.

The 16 units in four groups

• Our country and our community (units 1 to 4): Pakistan, villages and cities, roles and responsibilities, and religious festivals in Pakistan.
• The natural world (units 5 to 10): the natural environment and resources, water, plants, animals, agriculture and livestock, and conserving the Earth's resources.
• Science ideas (unit 11): heat and light.
• People and values (units 12 to 16): helping others, professions and occupations, respecting others and appreciating diversity, forgiveness, and being just and fair.

Learning general knowledge by looking around

Most units can become a short walk or a talk at home. In the villages and cities unit, ask your child what is different about a village and a city. In the water unit, trace where tap water comes from. In the plants and animals units, look at a garden or a farm. In the professions unit, list the jobs done by people your child meets in a week. In the values units, ask what your child would do to be fair when sharing.

Amazing World 2 and Smart General Knowledge 2
