Quick facts

What is this book?

A computer book for seven-year-olds should show that a computer is something to make things with, not only to watch. The cover does this by showing children typing, and the units back it up: drawing, writing and coding. The book first teaches the words and ideas (what a computer is, what its parts do, where files go), then the internet and safety, then the hands-on skills.

Why the order works

  1. Words first (units 1 to 3). A child needs the vocabulary before the skills: what a computer is, what its parts do, where information is stored.
  2. Safety straight after the internet (units 3 and 4). A child who has just learned to open a browser is immediately taught to protect personal information and to talk to a trusted adult.
  3. Hands-on skills (units 5 to 7). MS Paint teaches drawing, typing text on a picture, and saving and naming files. Word follows with the basics of a document. ScratchJr, a block-based coding tool for young children, takes the longest unit, about twenty pages, and lets children make a character move and dance using loops and conditions.
  4. A small project (unit 8). The book ends by joining everything together: find out what a friend needs, make a birthday card and treat it as a tiny business.

Who is it for?

Class 2 students on the Allied School list, and parents who want to follow what the child is doing on the computer. Some units assume that MS Paint, Word and the ScratchJr app are available at school, so check with the class teacher what your child can use at home.
